The Buzz: 1/4/10
Here are some of the latest news stories from various sources:
- ESPN.com reports that the Cardinals are getting closer to a deal with Matt Holliday. The deal could be a seven-year deal.
- Wang’s agent told 1050 ESPN
that he has heard from 15 teams who are interested in Wang. The Yankees
were one of them, while the Mets were not. No other teams were
mentioned. - The Red Sox have made an offer for third baseman, Adrian Beltre, according to ESPN.com. Other teams are also interest including the Angels, Athletics and Orioles.
- Buster Olney tweets that the Athletics have pulled their offer off the table for Adrian Beltre.
- According to SNY, Jason Bay has passed his physical and is officially a New York Met, to be announced tomorrow.
- An AP source tells NBCSports.com that Bay’s deal with the Mets will have a $17M option for 2014.
- Mike Axisa of River Avenue Blues says that the Yankees should go after the A’s, Travis Buck, to play the outfield.
- The NY Post reports that David Cone will not be returning to the YES Network. Tino Martinez is a possible replacement.
- 7:40 p.m. SI.com has learned that the Red Sox are now close to a deal with Adrian Beltre. The deal is believed to be at least two-years with an opt-out option after this season.
- 9:19 p.m. Peter Gammons says via Twitter that the Red Sox have agreed to a one-year deal worth $9M, with a player option for $5M. 9:31 p.m. FOXSports.com confirms.
- 9:25 p.m. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com tweets about a possible trade that would send Luis Castillo to the Red Sox, and Mike Lowell to the Mets. The deal would work out for the Red Sox with Beltre coming, and with Castillo gone, the Mets could go after Orlando Hudson.
- 9:29 p.m. Chad Jennings of The Journal News reports that the Indians have signed Shelly Duncan.

Chat or Chuck: Erik Bedard
He hasn’t been talked about much, but he’s out there. Remember a couple months ago when the Yankees were possibly going to trade for Bedard? Well, he’s now a free agent. The Yankees have starting pitching at the top of their wish list this offseason, or at least they should, and Bedard is an option.
Why Chat?:
- He had a 2.82 ERA this season in 15 starts.
- He is an overwhelming strikeout pitcher with a career 8.8 SO/9 ratio. He led the league with a 10.9 SO/9 ratio in 2007.
- He is a type B free agent, so the Yankees wouldn’t need to give up yet another first round draft pick like they would if they signed a type A such as Lackey. Eventually, the Yankees are going to need to go for the prospects. Now may be the time.
Why Chuck?:
- He is a bit injury prone, making only 30 starts in the past two seasons.
- He walks a lot of people: 3.6 batters per nine innings.
- He gives up more than eight hits per nine innings. He led the league in that category in 2007.
- He has only pitched for Baltimore and Seattle and may not be able to handle a big, competitive city like New York.
Chat or Chuck?:
Chat. Why not? Bedard is the best choice besides Lackey. If the Yankees get Lackey, it will come at a much higher price and they will need to give up another first round pick, which is starting to get on my nerves. In the end, Bedard is a very good pitcher. Hey, they almost traded for him on their run to a championship.

Another win. Another sweep. Thats six in a row for the Yanks. Their second sweep in a row. I’m going to need a new broom. CC was the starter for the Yanks tonight. He was a bit shaky in the first two innings, but turned it on. He finished the night going seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and striking out nine.
Both teams scored early. Markakis had a sac-fly in the first and Hinske had another solo homer for the Yanks in the third. Both teams were shut down until the seventh, when A-Rod came through with a big two-run single to make it 3-1 Yanks. Bruney came in and was horrible again. He gave up a line-out and a homer to make it 3-2. Coke and Hughes finished the inning.
Then it was the ninth. Jeter led off the inning with a walk. A-Rod had another two-run single to make it 5-2 Yanks. The Bombers went on to score five more runs in the inning, to make it a massive 10-2 lead.
Hughes came back out for the ninth and struck out the side.
Player of the Game: C.C. Sabathia: W, 7.0 IP, 7 H, ER, BB, 9 SO, 0 HR
The Wrap-Up:
Sabathia got his MLB leading 16th win of the season tonight. The Yanks are 37 games over .500, yet another high water mark. The Red Sox finally lost, so the Yankees are now 7.5 ahead in the East. It’s starting to smell a little comfortable in here. The Bombers have won six in a row.

The Yanks fly north of the border to Toronto tonight. In the first of four, it’ll be Gaudin against Romero.

Wow. It seems like I start every entry with those words. This team seems to always amaze. Pettitte flirted with history tonight. He pitched 6.2 innings before Hairston booted the ball and then Markakis, on the next at-bat, hit a clean single to cap off the hopes on the no-hitter. You can blame Hairston, but he’s been so great for the Yanks, you really can’t get down on him. Plus the fact that he made a bad pitch to Markakis. He pitched great and thats the bottom line. He gave up just two hits, one of them a home run by Mora in the eighth, but that was all.
Swisher and Cano both had two RBI’s on the night and Damon had an RBI as well. Swisher was just a triple away from the cycle, but I don’t think anyone expected a triple from him.
In the ninth inning, Bruney came in with a four run lead. Good job by the Yankees having Rivera warming. You had to think that Bruney would blow it. He got one out, but also gave up a hit and a walk. All of the sudden, it was a save situation. Rivera came in and got Markakis on a pop up and then struck out Reimond to end the game.

The Wrap-Up:
Pshhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It’s starting to get a bit boring with all of these wins. Pettitte was great again, and boy it would be a big lift if he can keep this up. The Yanks hit another high water mark, 35 games over .500. Boston was off so the Yanks have a 6.5 game lead in the east.

September begins! It’s gettin’ close. Tomorrow A.J. Burnett (10-8, 4.10) goes against Baltimores Hernandez (4-6, 4.24). Boston is in Tampa.
