Chat or Chuck: Erik Bedard

He hasn’t been talked about much, but he’s out there. Remember a couple months ago when the Yankees were possibly going to trade for Bedard? Well, he’s now a free agent. The Yankees have starting pitching at the top of their wish list this offseason, or at least they should, and Bedard is an option.

Why Chat?:

  • He had a 2.82 ERA this season in 15 starts.
  • He is an overwhelming strikeout pitcher with a career 8.8 SO/9 ratio. He led the league with a 10.9 SO/9 ratio in 2007.
  • He is a type B free agent, so the Yankees wouldn’t need to give up yet another first round draft pick like they would if they signed a type A such as Lackey. Eventually, the Yankees are going to need to go for the prospects. Now may be the time.

Why Chuck?:

  • He is a bit injury prone, making only 30 starts in the past two seasons.
  • He walks a lot of people: 3.6 batters per nine innings.
  • He gives up more than eight hits per nine innings. He led the league in that category in 2007.
  • He has only pitched for Baltimore and Seattle and may not be able to handle a big, competitive city like New York.

Chat or Chuck?:
Chat. Why not? Bedard is the best choice besides Lackey. If the Yankees get Lackey, it will come at a much higher price and they will need to give up another first round pick, which is starting to get on my nerves. In the end, Bedard is a very good pitcher. Hey, they almost traded for him on their run to a championship.

Jeter Becomes Elite, Yanks Fall In Finale

Yankees bullpen falters as Mariners come out firing to salvage final game.

Well, lets start with the bright side. With a hit today, Derek Jeter now stands as the player with the most hits for a shortstop in Major League Baseball history. He’s a star, there is no doubting that. 
The rest of the game was not as happy for the Yankees. The Yankees scored first in the third , on a Jeter RBI double. The Mariners came back with two in the bottom half of the inning, to give them the lead, but not for long. The next half inning, Swisher hit a two run shot to make it 3-2 Yankees. 
The Yankees did not score again, while the Mariners went on to score eight more runs to give them a 10-3 victory. 
Joba was shaky once again. He went five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three. Aceves was basically horrible, giving up four runs in 1.2 innings, not to mention the two hit batters. Gaudin was the same, surrendering two runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
From the other dugout, things were not bad. The youngster, Fister, gave up just three runs in seven innings pitched, striking out four and walking none. Jakubauskas then closed it out, pitching two scorless innings.

The Wrap-Up:
Lets face it, you can’t win ‘em all. The Red Sox lost, so its no big deal losing this one. The Yanks are still 7.5 games up and still won the series. Hopefully the Yanks can bounce back in the series opener in Oakland tomorrow night. They should be able to. I would also like to give out my best wished to David Wright and Hiroki Kuroda. What happened was very, very scary and its a shame that those two had to be the ones to experience the one bad side of the game. Please get well very soon, we all look forward to your returns.

The Yanks fly to Oakland tonight to open up a four game set tomorrow night at 10:05 ET. The Yankees send A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.71) to the mound, looking to rebound from a shaky start in New York. He faces off against former Yankee, Brett Tomko (1-2, 5.23).

CC was absolutely lights out in his last start. And boy was it a big one, against the Boston Red Sox. He went 7.2 innings, gave up just two hits and no runs, while walking two and striking out nine, a season high. He retired the first 13 batters he faced. In his last two starts, CC has struck out 14 batters in 14.2 innings and has a WHIP of 0.954. Since 2005, CC is 17-2 in the month of August, thats the most wins for any pitcher in that span. In seven career starts at Safeco Field, Sabathia is 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA and a WHIP of 1.091. 
Tidbits:
Ichiro is a career .415 hitter against Sabathia. The Mariners as a team are .297 hitters against CC. The Yankees are just 13-11 in games that Sabathia starts, but in his last nine starts, their 6-3. The Yankees average over 5 runs per game when CC is on the mound.

This will be Snells third start as a Mariner, his last one didn’t go so well. He went just 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and six walks against the Rays. This is Snells first career start against the Yankees. In his last three starts, Ian has an ERA of 8.10 and a WHIP of 2.100. 
Tidbits:
The Pirates and Mariners are 4-13 in games that Snell starts. Jerry Hairston and Nick Swisher are the only players on the Yankees with a hit. Mark Teixeira is the only other Yankee to have faced S
nell, he is 0 for 5.
