Yanks decline arbitration on trio

Matsui 12:2.jpgThe Yankees have declined to offer arbitration to free agents Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Andy Pettitte. The Yankees also didn’t offer arbitration to Jerry Hairston Jr., Eric Hinske, Jose Molina and Xavier Nady.

If the Yankees had excepted arbitration on any of the players, they would have been considered signed with an amount to be determined in the arbitration process. The Yankees can still negotiate with any of these players.

Was this a good choice of a bad choice? Lets take a look.

Positives:

  • All of these players would have gotten raises in the arbitration process.
  • The Yankees don’t need Matsui anyway.

Negatives:

  • The Yankees don’t get draft picks if any of these players sign anywhere else.

Was this a good or bad choice? It was a great choice. Why was it a good choice? Lets analyze that for each player.

Damon: The Yankees are likely to resign him. He had such a good year that he would have gotten a raise that his age doesn’t merit. He wants to play for the Yankees, so the Yankees can get him cheaper.

Pettitte: As I said, the only negative is that if they sign anywhere else, the Yankees won’t get compensation. As for Pettitte, that doesn’t matter, because in the twilight of his career, I don’t see him turning his back on the Yankees, especially after winning a championship.

Matsui: This one is interesting. Of the three, he has the best chance of signing with another team. But for two reasons, it wouldn’t make sense to offer him arbitration. (a) the Yankees still don’t need him and (b) he would have made a killing in arbitration. The Yankees can get him cheap if they want him because he really wants to play for the Yankees. So, theres no sense in bringing him to arbitration where he could make probably triple what he deserves.

The New York Meter Results

Here are the results to the first New York Meter of the off season. Thanks to all who voted!

Should the Yankees resign Matsui?
Yes 0% (0 votes)
No 100% (3 votes)
My Vote: No

Yes, he was the World Series MVP, and nobody doubts that Matsui is a great, great hitter. But his knees have handcuffed his ability, and this day in age, a player that can’t play the field is a bit of a liability on a 25 man roster no matter how good of a hitter he is. You need every bit of talent you can get to win this game these days, and a player that can’t play the field just isn’t good enough.

Should the Yankees resign Damon?
Yes 75% (3 votes)
No 25% (1 vote)
My Vote: Yes

The 37 year old has shown zero signs of slowing down. The new Yankee Stadium has played right into his strengths, and may be a great reason to bring him back. His 24 home runs this year tied a career high. Unlike Matsui, Damon can still play the outfield — quite well he proved this year — and if needed, can still fall back on the DH.

Should the Yankees resign Pettitte?
Yes 100% (4 votes)
No 0% (0 votes)
My Vote: Yes

It was the same debate last year, and was a very questionable signing in the end. This year, it seems pretty obvious that the Yankees should bring him back. He won every clinching game for the Yankees in the postseason, and was a HUGE part of this championship. Pettitte should come at a cheap price with huge rewards for a 3rd or 4th starter.

What should the Yankees do about their backup catcher?
Resign Molina 20% (1 vote)
Go with Cervelli 80% (4 votes)
My Vote: Go with Cervelli

This may end up being a long, tough decision for the Yankees. With Molina, the Yankees get a great defensive catcher, but a terrible hitter. With Cervelli, the Yankees get a younger, more athletic player who is a much better hitter. Tough choice for the Yankees, but getting younger always seems to be the better choice, no matter what.

What position do the Yankees most need to fill in the offseason?
Left field 0% (0 votes)
Right field 0% (0 votes)
Starting pitcher 100% (4 votes)
Relief Pitcher 0% (0 votes)
Center field 0% (0 votes)
Catcher 0% (0 votes)
Other 0% (0 votes)
My Vote: Starting pitcher

Starting pitcher wins by a landslide. The biggest question marks remain in left field and right field, but if the Yankees will compete, they are going to need another starter. I have talked about Lackey, and I hope it will happen. But, either way, the point is that the Yankees will need something to go with CC, A.J., and maybe Pettitte. At most, the Yankees have 3 starters at the moment (assuming Joba doesn’t start PLEASE!).  They need someone else.

NY Note #3

Jose Catching.pngWhat do you think is going to happen with the backup catcher situation?
Bring back Molina, or use Cervelli? Or will it be someone entirely
different? What would you like to see happen?

Good question. Of all of the big Yankee free agents — such as Damon and Matsui — little attention is being given to a player that, for a lot of the year, came up in conversation a lot.

To answer your question, it’s very tough to predict what the Yankees will do. All I can say is that the Yankees are very high on Molina and his defensive abilities; starting him in the World Series over Posada will show you that. Obviously, they think he is extremely important to their huge investment in A.J. Burnett, so in that regard, I would say they would bring him back. Plus the fact that he wouldn’t be very expensive.

On the other hand, the Yankees have very openly said that they want to get younger and more athletic, and in that regard, Cervelli would be the obvious choice.

As for me, I would like to see them show some confidence in Cervelli. Obviously, Molina is one of the best defensive catchers in the league, but Cervelli is certainly not a liability behind the plate. As Molina plays a huge factor for Burnet, Cervelli actually plays as a huge factor for an even bigger investment in C.C. Sabathia. When C.C. threw to Cervelli, opposing hitters hit just .195 as opposed to .233 with Molina and .262 with Posada.

We also have to consider offense. Molina has really become a liability in that regard. This season, Molina hit .217 and Cervelli hit .298. Each had just one homer.

In the end, neither is a huge difference maker, but both have their advantages. Molina helps A.J. and is a better defensive catcher while Cervelli helps C.C. and is a better offensive catcher. To me, what it comes down to is that Cervelli is a younger player with more potential, and that always proves to be the better choice.

A.J. Burnett.jpg
A.J. Burnett
#34 RHP
(10-5) 3.71 ERA 145.2 IP 130 SO 1.394 WHIP
Following porbably his best start of his career, Burnett was shaky against the Blue Jays in his last start. He surrendered three runs in six innings giving up 10 hits and throwing two more wild pitches. In his career at the Coliseum, Burnett has a 2.13 ERA. Against Oakland over the course of his career, A.J. is 2-2 with a 4.14 ERA and a WHIP of a little over one and a half. Since Burnett’s horrible start in Boston, he has an ERA of 2.50 in 11 starts.
Tidbits:
No Athletics hitter has more than three hits against Burnett in their careers. Mark Ellis has the most PA against Burnett with 18. The Yankees are 16-7 when Burnett starts the game. The Yankees score an average of 5.83 runs scored when Burnett is on the mound.
Key to the Game:
The Athletics bullpen has an ERA of 3.76, which is considerably better than any of their starters. Its up to the Yanks to get to the starters, and get a lead before getting into that strong bullpen.
Athletics Probable Pitcher:

Brett Tomko.jpg
Brett Tomko

Brett made his last appearance as a Yankee on July 11th, when he gave up one run in 1.1 innings against the Angels. In five career games against the Yankees, Tomko is 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP over two. In 260 career starts, Brett has an ERA of 4.66.

A-Rod is 4 for 8 with two home runs in his career against Tomko. Johnny Damon has the most PA against Tomko in his career with 18.

Jeter Becomes Elite, Yanks Fall In Finale

Yankees bullpen falters as Mariners come out firing to salvage final game.

Yankees Logo.pngVSMariners Logo.png

8:16 Box 2.png

Doug Fister 8:16.png

Well, lets start with the bright side. With a hit today, Derek Jeter now stands as the player with the most hits for a shortstop in Major League Baseball history. He’s a star, there is no doubting that.
The rest of the game was not as happy for the Yankees. The Yankees scored first in the third , on a Jeter RBI double. The Mariners came back with two in the bottom half of the inning, to give them the lead, but not for long. The next half inning, Swisher hit a two run shot to make it 3-2 Yankees.
The Yankees did not score again, while the Mariners went on to score eight more runs to give them a 10-3 victory.
Joba was shaky once again. He went five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three. Aceves was basically horrible, giving up four runs in 1.2 innings, not to mention the two hit batters. Gaudin was the same, surrendering two runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
From the other dugout, things were not bad. The youngster, Fister, gave up just three runs in seven innings pitched, striking out four and walking none. Jakubauskas then closed it out, pitching two scorless innings.
Player of the Game: Doug Fister: W, 7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR
The Wrap-Up:
Lets face it, you can’t win ‘em all. The Red Sox lost, so its no big deal losing this one. The Yanks are still 7.5 games up and still won the series. Hopefully the Yanks can bounce back in the series opener in Oakland tomorrow night. They should be able to. I would also like to give out my best wished to David Wright and Hiroki Kuroda. What happened was very, very scary and its a shame that those two had to be the ones to experience the one bad side of the game. Please get well very soon, we all look forward to your returns.
Coming Up Next:
The Yanks fly to Oakland tonight to open up a four game set tomorrow night at 10:05 ET. The Yankees send A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.71) to the mound, looking to rebound from a shaky start in New York. He faces off against former Yankee, Brett Tomko (1-2, 5.23).

CC Sabathia.jpg
C.C. Sabathia
#52 LHP
(12-7) 3.76 ERA 162.2 IP 123 SO 1.168 WHIP
CC was absolutely lights out in his last start. And boy was it a big one, against the Boston Red Sox. He went 7.2 innings, gave up just two hits and no runs, while walking two and striking out nine, a season high. He retired the first 13 batters he faced. In his last two starts, CC has struck out 14 batters in 14.2 innings and has a WHIP of 0.954. Since 2005, CC is 17-2 in the month of August, thats the most wins for any pitcher in that span. In seven career starts at Safeco Field, Sabathia is 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA and a WHIP of 1.091.
Tidbits:
Ichiro is a career .415 hitter against Sabathia. The Mariners as a team are .297 hitters against CC. The Yankees are just 13-11 in games that Sabathia starts, but in his last nine starts, their 6-3. The Yankees average over 5 runs per game when CC is on the mound.

Mariners Probable Pitcher:

Ian Snell.jpg
Ian Snell
#48 RHP
(2-8) 5.42 ERA 88.0 IP 57 SO 1.648 WHIP
This will be Snells third start as a Mariner, his last one didn’t go so well. He went just 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and six walks against the Rays. This is Snells first career start against the Yankees. In his last three starts, Ian has an ERA of 8.10 and a WHIP of 2.100.
Tidbits:
The Pirates and Mariners are 4-13 in games that Snell starts. Jerry Hairston and Nick Swisher are the only players on the Yankees with a hit. Mark Teixeira is the only other Yankee to have faced S
nell, he is 0 for 5.

Keys to the Game:
  1. Strike One: In 2009, when Snell throws strike one, opposing hitters are batting .227, when he doesn’t, they are hitting .361.
  2. Patience: This year, Snell averages 5.4 walks per nine innings.
  3. Get to the ‘pen: In the month of August, Pirates relievers have a combined 7.02 ERA.

Cano Caps Another Walk-Off, Big Home Stand

Walk off single in the 11th makes it nine out of ten for Bombers.

Blue Jays Primary Logo.png  VSYankees Primary Logo
8:12 Box.png

It was just five days ago that the Yankees took 15 innings to beat the Red Sox. Today, it took the Yankees 11 innings to beat the Blue Jays 4-3 to cap off a 6-1 home stand.
The day began, though, with a little bit of a scare. In the first inning Derek Jeter was hit with a pitch on the right foot, and left the game a little later. Luckily, X-Rays taken at the Stadium were negative.
In the first, Jeter moved to third on a Damon double, then scored on an RBI ground-out by Posada. Ruiz homered in his second straight game to tie the game at one.
The scoring was on hold until the third inning, when Damon drilled a solo shot to right field to give the Yanks a 2-1 lead. In the next inning, Cano went deep to make the Yankee lead 3-1.
Then in the sixth, an RBI single by Chavez and a wild pitch, tied the game at 3.
Burnett went six innings and gave up three runs on ten hits while walking two and striking out seven. Romero also went six innings and gave up three runs. He struck out five and walked three.
Coke, Robertson, Hughes and Gaudin — in his Yankee debut — all combined for five scorless innings, giving up just four hits a
nd striking out six batters.
For the Jays, League pitched three great scorless innings, giving up just one hit.
The great efforts by both bullpens were all put to rest in the 11th inning. A-Rod was hit by a pitch and was shaken up for a minute before taking first. Then a single by Posada moved A-Rod to second. Robbie Cano was next and delivered a walk-off single that hit off the top of the right center field wall to seal the win, the series and the home stand.

Player of the Game: Robinson Cano: 2 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, R

The Wrap-Up:
The Yankees are now nine for their last ten, and have capped off a great 6-1 home stand. The Yankees have pretty much proved two things: in this ballpark, they can win close games, and if it gets to extras, its over. The Yanks are now 28 games over .500, a new season high. The Red Sox play tonight, so the Yankees are currently six games ahead of Boston.

Coming Up Next:
The Yankees fly out west tonight to open up a set against the Mariners. Tomorrow night at 10:10 ET, it will be Sabthia (12-7, 3.76) vs. Snell (2-8,5.42). The Red Sox have to deal with Verlander tomorrow afternoon. They send Clay Buchholz to the mound.
