Yanks decline arbitration on trio

Matsui 12:2.jpgThe Yankees have declined to offer arbitration to free agents Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Andy Pettitte. The Yankees also didn’t offer arbitration to Jerry Hairston Jr., Eric Hinske, Jose Molina and Xavier Nady.

If the Yankees had excepted arbitration on any of the players, they would have been considered signed with an amount to be determined in the arbitration process. The Yankees can still negotiate with any of these players.

Was this a good choice of a bad choice? Lets take a look.

Positives:

  • All of these players would have gotten raises in the arbitration process.
  • The Yankees don’t need Matsui anyway.

Negatives:

  • The Yankees don’t get draft picks if any of these players sign anywhere else.

Was this a good or bad choice? It was a great choice. Why was it a good choice? Lets analyze that for each player.

Damon: The Yankees are likely to resign him. He had such a good year that he would have gotten a raise that his age doesn’t merit. He wants to play for the Yankees, so the Yankees can get him cheaper.

Pettitte: As I said, the only negative is that if they sign anywhere else, the Yankees won’t get compensation. As for Pettitte, that doesn’t matter, because in the twilight of his career, I don’t see him turning his back on the Yankees, especially after winning a championship.

Matsui: This one is interesting. Of the three, he has the best chance of signing with another team. But for two reasons, it wouldn’t make sense to offer him arbitration. (a) the Yankees still don’t need him and (b) he would have made a killing in arbitration. The Yankees can get him cheap if they want him because he really wants to play for the Yankees. So, theres no sense in bringing him to arbitration where he could make probably triple what he deserves.

Derek is a sure candidate for the AL MVP with 212 hits (2nd in the AL), a .334 batting average (3rd in the AL) and a stellar year at short stop. Congratulations Derek Jeter on your 2009 season award!

After signing a record breaking contract with the Yankees in the 2008 off season, Sabathia has stepped up big for this franchise. Sabathia’s 19 wins rank 1st in the Majors, his 3.37 ERA ranks 4th in the Majors and his 1.15 WHIP ranks 4th in the AL. Sabathia is an overwhelming candidate for the 2009 AL Cy Young award. Congratulations C.C. Sabathia on your 2009 season award!

BEST MOMENT:
A-Rod and Yanks Walk Off In 15 Inning Affair Against BOS

Possibly one of the best games of 2009 in all of the Major Leagues. A 0-0 game going into the 15th inning against the Red Sox ended with a 2-run, walk off home run by Alex Rodriguez. Of the 15 walk off of the season, this one, I think we can all agree, was the sweetest. The Yankees went on to sweep the Red Sox in that four game set. Congratulations Alex Rodriguez on your 2009 season award!

A.J.’s One Hit Shut Out (6/27 vs NYM)

As a part of a sweep in the Yankees first trip to Citi Field, A.J. contributed by throwing a 7.0 inning, one hit shut out, while striking out 10 Mets. Congratulations A.J. Burnett on your 2009 season award!

Cano’s turn around has been a huge part of this Yankee surge. Going from a .271 batting average, 162 hits and 14 home runs
last year to a .320 batting average, 204 hits and 25 home runs this year. His hits rank 3rd in the AL league. Congratulations Robinson Cano on your 2009 season award!

BEST DEFENDER:
Mark Teixeira

One of the big three in the offseason signings contributed hugely at the plate, but also hugely at first base. His .997 fielding percentage ranks 2nd in the AL. He has made just 4 errors all season. Great plays day in and day out have massively helped this team win 103 games. Congratulations Mark Teixeira on your 2009 season award!

Making his Yankee debut on July 6th, Hinske has hit .226 for the Yankees with 7 home runs in 39 games. In his first 7 games with the Yankees, Hinkse hit 5 home runs. Hinske offers the Yankees some great, valuable options moving into the post season. Congratulations Eric Hinske on your 2009 season award!

BIGGEST STEP-UP PERFORMANCE:
Francisco Cervelli

When Posada went down, the Yankees didn’t have much options. Cervelli came up to take his place, and the expectations were not that high. A .180 hitter in AA hit .298 for the Yankees this year. His first career home run in Atlanta arguably turned the Yankee season around. Congratulations Francisco Cervelli on your 2009 season Award!

The Yankees were involved in the three biggest deals in the 2008 off season. The biggest was Mark Teixeira. A stellar glove at first won him an award earlier. His offense has him in contention for AL MVP. He leads the league in home runs with 39 and leads the league in RBI’s with 116. Without Teixeira, this team is much different. Congratulations Mark Teixeira on your second 2009 season award!

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT:
Chien-Ming Wang

After winning 36 games in two years, something bad happened to Wang. In 12 games this season, Wang was 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA and a WH
IP over 2. Perhaps it was his foot injury last year in Houston, but with Wang’s production this year, it’s amazing the Yankees were able to do what they have done. You won an award… but no congratulations.

Yankees now go 36 games over .500, the most since 2000. Burnett has been pretty horrible lately and is going to need to get on track. Boston beat Tampa, but who cares. If the Yanks keep winning, it wont matter anymore. The Yankees maintain their 6.5 game lead in the east.

This isn’t fair. We pay $5 for a water bottle at Yankee Stadium and they won’t even pay us back by telling us what these ridiculous “Joba Rules” are. I guess we will just be surprised like we were today. The Yankees pulled out Joba after pitching three innings of two run, four hit ball. He gave up a very quick run on a Podsednik lead off triple and an RBI ground out. Then he gave up another run in the third, scored by Alexi Ramirez. It’s a little odd though, Joba only threw 35 pitches, so it wasn’t the pitch limit, it was an innings limit. What if he had thrown 90 pitches in three innings? Don’t tell me it wouldn’t be different, very odd, very questionable. 
Aceves was great. He came in relief and pitched three scoreless innings to earn his Major League leading 9th win as a relief pitcher.
Lets talk about Derek Jeter. With two hits today, he is now 11 away from breaking Lou Gehrigs franchise record. He started rallies in the first and third. The third was highlighted by Johnny Damon’s career tying 24th home run of the season. 
Then there was the big seventh inning. After Garcia left the game, who pitched pretty well, the Yankees pounded the White Sox bullpen. The rally, and ultimately the game, was capped off by a Mark Teixeira “Teix” message that drove in three Yankee runs. 
Damon left the game with cramps in his calves. He says he expects to be in the game tomorrow. Jerry Hairston Jr. replaced him and hit a sac fly as a part of that five-run seventh. Seems like every time he comes in the game, he does something right. What a pick up for the Yankees.

The Wrap-Up:
With a win today, the Yankees go 4-2 on the road trip. They hit their high water mark at 34 games over .500, with a record of 82-48. Boston beat Toronto (big deal) so the Yankees maintain their 6 game lead in the division.

Coming Up Next:
The Yanks fly to Baltimore and open up a three game set tomorrow. The first game is Pettitte (11-6, 4.18) against Guthrie (9-12, 5.26). Look out for Jeter sneaking up on Gehrig during this road trip. If there isn’t a huge slump, the record will likely be broken on this road trip. Jeter will finally be recognized as the star that he truly is.

CC was absolutely lights out in his last start. And boy was it a big one, against the Boston Red Sox. He went 7.2 innings, gave up just two hits and no runs, while walking two and striking out nine, a season high. He retired the first 13 batters he faced. In his last two starts, CC has struck out 14 batters in 14.2 innings and has a WHIP of 0.954. Since 2005, CC is 17-2 in the month of August, thats the most wins for any pitcher in that span. In seven career starts at Safeco Field, Sabathia is 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA and a WHIP of 1.091. 
Tidbits:
Ichiro is a career .415 hitter against Sabathia. The Mariners as a team are .297 hitters against CC. The Yankees are just 13-11 in games that Sabathia starts, but in his last nine starts, their 6-3. The Yankees average over 5 runs per game when CC is on the mound.

Cano Caps Another Walk-Off, Big Home Stand

It was just five days ago that the Yankees took 15 innings to beat the Red Sox. Today, it took the Yankees 11 innings to beat the Blue Jays 4-3 to cap off a 6-1 home stand. 
The day began, though, with a little bit of a scare. In the first inning Derek Jeter was hit with a pitch on the right foot, and left the game a little later. Luckily, X-Rays taken at the Stadium were negative. 
In the first, Jeter moved to third on a Damon double, then scored on an RBI ground-out by Posada. Ruiz homered in his second straight game to tie the game at one. 
The scoring was on hold until the third inning, when Damon drilled a solo shot to right field to give the Yanks a 2-1 lead. In the next inning, Cano went deep to make the Yankee lead 3-1.
Then in the sixth, an RBI single by Chavez and a wild pitch, tied the game at 3. 
Burnett went six innings and gave up three runs on ten hits while walking two and striking out seven. Romero also went six innings and gave up three runs. He struck out five and walked three. 
Coke, Robertson, Hughes and Gaudin — in his Yankee debut — all combined for five scorless innings, giving up just four hits a
nd striking out six batters.
For the Jays, League pitched three great scorless innings, giving up just one hit.
The great efforts by both bullpens were all put to rest in the 11th inning. A-Rod was hit by a pitch and was shaken up for a minute before taking first. Then a single by Posada moved A-Rod to second. Robbie Cano was next and delivered a walk-off single that hit off the top of the right center field wall to seal the win, the series and the home stand.

The Wrap-Up:
The Yankees are now nine for their last ten, and have capped off a great 6-1 home stand. The Yankees have pretty much proved two things: in this ballpark, they can win close games, and if it gets to extras, its over. The Yanks are now 28 games over .500, a new season high. The Red Sox play tonight, so the Yankees are currently six games ahead of Boston.

Coming Up Next:
The Yankees fly out west tonight to open up a set against the Mariners. Tomorrow night at 10:10 ET, it will be Sabthia (12-7, 3.76) vs. Snell (2-8,5.42). The Red Sox have to deal with Verlander tomorrow afternoon. They send Clay Buchholz to the mound.
