Phlying back to NY
Series resumes Wednesday in New York with Yanks up 3-2.
The Yankees and Phillies are back in New York and will take their workouts today at the Stadium.
As if the Yankee loss in game 5 wouldn’t cause enough uproar among Yankee fans, there is also the Burnett debate smeared over it.
Girardi has made some questionable moves at times, but seriously, in any baseball game, who would you rather have on the mound, Burnett or Gaudin? There was no way that Girardi was going to tell this huge offseason investment to miss out on the clinching game.
Burnett going on short rest also sets up Pettitte — with the most postseason wins of all time — to pitch the clinching game in New York against Pedro Martinez. That situation doesn’t sound to bad to me. Not to mention you have CC to fall back on in game 7, just like the ALCS.
Pettitte on short rest has a 4.15 ERA in his career and hasn’t done it since he was an Astro in 2006. Forget the numbers, Pettitte has pitched in the postseason more than any other pitcher in the history of the game, I don’t think we have to worry about anything.
For those of you playing flashbacks of 2004 over and over in your head, let me calm you down. The Yankees led the league with a .704 winning percentage at home. They outscored opponents by 101 runs and hit 136 homers in their new park.
And another thing, for all of the chaos and commotion taking place in New York over this game 5 loss, let me tell you something. The Yankees went into the defending champions home and beat them 2 out of 3. The only pitcher they have lost to is the Phillies best and the Yankees have a chance to clinch in their new home with the most experienced pitcher in the world on the mound. What are you complaining about?

After signing a record breaking contract with the Yankees in the 2008 off season, Sabathia has stepped up big for this franchise. Sabathia’s 19 wins rank 1st in the Majors, his 3.37 ERA ranks 4th in the Majors and his 1.15 WHIP ranks 4th in the AL. Sabathia is an overwhelming candidate for the 2009 AL Cy Young award. Congratulations C.C. Sabathia on your 2009 season award!

BEST MOMENT:
A-Rod and Yanks Walk Off In 15 Inning Affair Against BOS
Possibly one of the best games of 2009 in all of the Major Leagues. A 0-0 game going into the 15th inning against the Red Sox ended with a 2-run, walk off home run by Alex Rodriguez. Of the 15 walk off of the season, this one, I think we can all agree, was the sweetest. The Yankees went on to sweep the Red Sox in that four game set. Congratulations Alex Rodriguez on your 2009 season award!

BEST PITCHING PERFORMANCE:
A.J.’s One Hit Shut Out (6/27 vs NYM)
As a part of a sweep in the Yankees first trip to Citi Field, A.J. contributed by throwing a 7.0 inning, one hit shut out, while striking out 10 Mets. Congratulations A.J. Burnett on your 2009 season award!

BEST DEFENDER:
Mark Teixeira
One of the big three in the offseason signings contributed hugely at the plate, but also hugely at first base. His .997 fielding percentage ranks 2nd in the AL. He has made just 4 errors all season. Great plays day in and day out have massively helped this team win 103 games. Congratulations Mark Teixeira on your 2009 season award!

Eric Hinske
Making his Yankee debut on July 6th, Hinske has hit .226 for the Yankees with 7 home runs in 39 games. In his first 7 games with the Yankees, Hinkse hit 5 home runs. Hinske offers the Yankees some great, valuable options moving into the post season. Congratulations Eric Hinske on your 2009 season award!

Francisco Cervelli
When Posada went down, the Yankees didn’t have much options. Cervelli came up to take his place, and the expectations were not that high. A .180 hitter in AA hit .298 for the Yankees this year. His first career home run in Atlanta arguably turned the Yankee season around. Congratulations Francisco Cervelli on your 2009 season Award!

Mark Teixeira
The Yankees were involved in the three biggest deals in the 2008 off season. The biggest was Mark Teixeira. A stellar glove at first won him an award earlier. His offense has him in contention for AL MVP. He leads the league in home runs with 39 and leads the league in RBI’s with 116. Without Teixeira, this team is much different. Congratulations Mark Teixeira on your second 2009 season award!

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT:
Chien-Ming Wang
After winning 36 games in two years, something bad happened to Wang. In 12 games this season, Wang was 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA and a WH
IP over 2. Perhaps it was his foot injury last year in Houston, but with Wang’s production this year, it’s amazing the Yankees were able to do what they have done. You won an award… but no congratulations.

Mitre couldn’t go tonight because of a sore forearm after getting hit with a line drive in his last start. That start, not to mention, was his best as a Yankee, and probably the best of his career. So, to take his place, Gaudin made the start. He was good to begin with, but seemed to get a little tired and lost the strike zone. He ended the night going 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks. Those walks really haunted him. Romero on the other side, gave up four runs in the first inning. Two were on errors. He got very strong for a few innings, then fell apart again. He ended going 4.1 innings giving up seven runs on six hits and seven strikeouts. Only five of those runs were earned. Aceves, Robertson, Bruney and Marte did another great job. They pitched a combined 5.1 innings and gave up just two hits and two runs. Both the hits and the runs were given up by Aceves. The Yankees got to Frasor in the ninth. At that moment, it was a close game. A-Rod hit a line drive right over the left field wall and Posada hit a two run moon shot to right. That blew the game open and made it 10-5.
Player of the Game: Jorge Posada: 4 for 5, R, 4 RBI
The Wrap-Up: Now seven in a row for the Yankees. They have scored 20 runs in the past two days. Wow. Save some for the playoffs boys! Boston won — who cares — so the Yankees still have a 7.5 game lead in the East. Just a little observation. I don’t know if you heard it, but there was someone at the stadium screaming “Vernon Wells, worse contract in baseball!” Then he was yelling out his stats. Pretty funny.
Coming Up Next: Chamberlain (8-4, 4.28) against Halladay (13-8, 3.13). Halladay just hasn’t been the same pitcher since he wasn’t traded. There will probably be some stupid innings limit tomorrow as well. We are in for an interesting game.

Another win. Another sweep. Thats six in a row for the Yanks. Their second sweep in a row. I’m going to need a new broom. CC was the starter for the Yanks tonight. He was a bit shaky in the first two innings, but turned it on. He finished the night going seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and striking out nine.
Both teams scored early. Markakis had a sac-fly in the first and Hinske had another solo homer for the Yanks in the third. Both teams were shut down until the seventh, when A-Rod came through with a big two-run single to make it 3-1 Yanks. Bruney came in and was horrible again. He gave up a line-out and a homer to make it 3-2. Coke and Hughes finished the inning.
Then it was the ninth. Jeter led off the inning with a walk. A-Rod had another two-run single to make it 5-2 Yanks. The Bombers went on to score five more runs in the inning, to make it a massive 10-2 lead.
Hughes came back out for the ninth and struck out the side.

The Wrap-Up:
Sabathia got his MLB leading 16th win of the season tonight. The Yanks are 37 games over .500, yet another high water mark. The Red Sox finally lost, so the Yankees are now 7.5 ahead in the East. It’s starting to smell a little comfortable in here. The Bombers have won six in a row.

The Yanks fly north of the border to Toronto tonight. In the first of four, it’ll be Gaudin against Romero.

Following porbably his best start of his career, Burnett was shaky against the Blue Jays in his last start. He surrendered three runs in six innings giving up 10 hits and throwing two more wild pitches. In his career at the Coliseum, Burnett has a 2.13 ERA. Against Oakland over the course of his career, A.J. is 2-2 with a 4.14 ERA and a WHIP of a little over one and a half. Since Burnett’s horrible start in Boston, he has an ERA of 2.50 in 11 starts.
Tidbits:
No Athletics hitter has more than three hits against Burnett in their careers. Mark Ellis has the most PA against Burnett with 18. The Yankees are 16-7 when Burnett starts the game. The Yankees score an average of 5.83 runs scored when Burnett is on the mound.
